Office of General Counsel

The Missouri Hospital Association’s Office of General Counsel has served as a general resource for legal information and consulting since 1981. This includes assisting members in analyzing legal questions and preparing them to work with their own legal counsel to resolve issues and providing legal support to MHA and its affiliated organizations.

As part of membership dues, MHA’s legal counsel provides the following five main services.

resources for legal information about a broad spectrum of health care issues
pursuit of a judicial advocacy program on behalf of members. This is accomplished through support of members in litigation in the role of amicus curiae (friend of the court), filing briefs focusing on broad-based policy issues beyond the facts that affect the litigating member. Acting as a representative of our membership, MHA also initiates litigation concerning important issues. Hospital senior management must request MHA’s participation as amicus curiae.
in-service educational sessions for hospital staff and hospital-sponsored community groups. This service assists hospitals in providing information to keep staff up-to-date on current legal issues and maintaining high quality employees in the face of significant turnover. Appropriate management personnel must request this service.
performing a full-service, in-house corporate counsel function for MHA and its affiliated companies
MHA Hospital Law, a monthly newsletter analyzing legal developments and trends of interest to the hospital community

With more than 25 years of specialized health care legal service experience, general counsel staff provides legal support for all aspects of MHA programs.
