Fewer Marketplace Insurance Issuers Apply For 2018 Coverage

Staff Contact: Andrew Wheeler

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced that 141 qualified health plan issuers have submitted applications to offer coverage in the marketplace in 2018. This is a 38 percent reduction from last year’s initial application submission. It should be noted that of the 227 initial applications for 2017, 167 actually participated. This leaves 26 fewer insurers that submitted applications this year than participated last year. CMS administrator Seema Verma stated, “This is further proof that the Affordable Care Act is failing. Insurers continue to flee the Exchanges, causing Americans to lose their choice for health insurance or lose their coverage all together.”
