April is National Donate Life Month. Mid-America Transplant Services, Midwest Transplant Network and other organ procurement organizations across the country share the importance of donation and transplantation to raise awareness, educate and motivate individuals to become donors.

In the U.S. in 2016, the number of organ transplants performed reached a new record high for the fourth consecutive year. For the year, 33,600 transplants were reported, representing an 8.5 percent increase over the 2015 total and an increase of 19.8 percent since 2012.

Each year, MHA recognizes two Missouri hospitals for their organ donation efforts at its annual convention in November. For these hospitals, organ and tissue donation is part of the culture of caring that permeates through the organization and community.

There are 120,000 men, women and children awaiting a lifesaving organ transplant, and although 95 percent of Americans are in favor of being a donor, only 52 percent are registered. Almost anyone can be an organ donor, regardless of age or medical history. To join the donor registry today, visit YesTheyWantMe.com.
