The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released a proposed rule, which would force 98 metropolitan statistical areas to participate in the Medicare episode payment model. The EPMs would penalize or reward participating hospitals based on their quality and cost of providing acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass graft and surgical hip/femur fracture treatment excluding lower extremity joint replacement services. MHA submitted comments about the proposed rule. The comments include the following.

  • Consistency of standards for EPMs
  • Mandatory national payment experiments
  • Selection process of the mandatory MSAs
  • Risk/reward sharing clarification
  • Treatment of critical access hospitals
