CMS Issues Psychiatric PPS Payment Update

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has issued the Medicare 2017 inpatient psychiatric facilities PPS payment updates for fiscal year 2017. The rule is slated to be published in the Aug. 1 issue of the Federal Register.

MHD Announces Ambulance Payment Increases

The MO HealthNet Division has issued a bulletin on its ambulance payment rates. Retroactive to dates of service on or after July 1, 2016, the Medicaid ambulance program’s maximum allowable payment rates for specified services will increase about 2 percent, plus an additional amount based on ground or air ambulance mode.

OIG Renders Advisory Opinion On Hospice Payments

The Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued Advisory Opinion No. 16-08 on July 20, which makes it clear that hospices can make supplemental payments to nursing facilities for room and board expenses under certain circumstances. The OIG concluded that hospices may pay for dually-eligible hospice room and board expenses, as long as the amount does not exceed what the nursing facility would have received from the state’s Medicaid program if patients had not elected to receive hospice care.
