Excellence in Governance

In 1985, the Missouri Hospital Association Board of Trustees established the Excellence in Governance awards. This program honors trustees from Missouri hospitals and health systems who excel in their duties as governing board members in both the boardroom and the community. Earlier this year, a call for nominations and selection criteria were mailed to every hospital chief executive officer. Award winners were selected by MHA’s district council presidents. These awards will be presented during the luncheon Thursday, June 12.

“The Changing Physician Workforce”
What’s the secret to attracting, engaging and retaining medical staff? Join Marc Bowles for the recruiter’s perspective on physician staffing, work ethic and compensation. You’ll learn how shortages soon may shape the way hospitals provide services and develop physician leadership. Bowles also will discuss the effects of increasing demand on services and identify market trends.

“One Hospital’s Journey to High Quality and Low Cost”
If you can measure it, you can move it. That’s the philosophy at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, Ill., which has earned Top 100 rankings since 2005. Connie R. Curran, Ed.D., R.N., FAAN, will share data about the hospital’s quality journey, including financial, clinical and customer metrics. Discussion also will include using the balanced scorecard to measure performance, communicate to stakeholders and reward employees.

“Understanding Hospital Finance for Trustees”
Many trustees find hospital financials challenging because they differ from other business formats. Thomas R. Green will share secrets to gaining a quick yet comprehensive understanding of hospital financial reports. Participants will learn to recognize bottom line success or failure, as well as how to access capital markets to ensure long-term success.

“Health Care Trends and Implications for Governance”
Health care is a top domestic concern this election year. The uninsured, the underinsured, cost and quality concerns, physician shortages and the economy are issues combining to create a time of potential crisis or opportunity. What will tip the balance? James E. Orlikoff will offer a big-picture look at these trends and how they affect hospital governance.

“The New Madrid Fault: What Missouri Hospitals Need to Know”
The question experts ask about the New Madrid fault is when, not if, an earthquake will occur. Predictions vary, but it’s certain hospitals must be prepared. Join James M. Wilkinson Jr. for a detailed look at the risks hospitals face statewide, as well as strategies for response and recovery.

“Physician Leadership: A Universal Prescription”
From the bedside to the board room, Brian D. Wong, M.D., MPH, encourages hospital leaders to transform health care by restoring compassion to the care we provide. Learn to align your organization’s mission and values to create an unprecedented level of engagement, participation and leadership among physicians.
